MARKUS KOTZUR
Prof. Dr. Markus Kotzur, LL.M. (Duke University), is a prominent figure in the field of European and International Law, currently serving as a professor at the Faculty of Law at Universität Hamburg. His academic journey includes studying law at the University of Freiburg and the University of Bayreuth, followed by a Master of Law program at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, USA. After completing his first state examination, Kotzur embarked on his magisterial studies, culminating in the academic degree of LL.M.
Kotzur's professional career began as a research assistant to Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Peter Häberle at the University of Bayreuth. In 2000, he was awarded a doctorate for his work on the "Theory Elements of International Human Rights Protection," exemplified by the preamble of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Subsequently, in 2002, he achieved his habilitation with a thesis on cross-border cooperation in Europe. His academic career saw him holding various positions at universities, including Cologne, Dresden, Würzburg, Münster, and Leipzig. In 2005, he joined the University of Leipzig as a professor for European law, international law, and public law. Since February 1, 2012, he has been a professor at Universität Hamburg, where he also serves as the Deputy Director of the Institute for International Affairs and furthermore as President of Europa-Kolleg Hamburg, a foundation established by the University in 1953.
At Universität Hamburg, Prof. Kotzur's responsibilities include serving as the Vice Dean for International Relations and Research.
